But if there is one area that consistently gets overlooked—and one area I wish every individual, healthcare professional, and company paid far more attention to—it's stress.
Not because stress is simply uncomfortable.
Because stress is biological.
Because stress changes the way your brain functions, the way your body stores energy, the way you sleep, the way you eat, and the way you heal.

Many people think stress is simply feeling overwhelmed or anxious. They see it as something happening in their mind. The truth is much bigger than that.
Stress is your body's natural alarm system. It's designed to protect you. When your brain perceives a threat—whether it's a near-miss in traffic, a difficult conversation, financial uncertainty, an impending deadline, or a family conflict—it activates a sophisticated biological cascade designed to keep you safe. This response is often called "fight or flight." In the short term, it's incredibly effective. In fact, it can save your life.
The problem is that modern stressors rarely disappear after a few minutes. Bills still need to be paid. Work continues. Kids need care. Health concerns linger. Relationships can be complicated. Responsibilities pile up. Instead of occasional stress, many people live with stress every single day. And that's when the alarm system starts causing damage.
What Happens Inside Your Body When You're Stressed?
The moment your brain identifies a threat, it sends signals through a communication network known as the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), often referred to as the body's stress highway. Your adrenal glands respond by releasing powerful stress hormones, including:
Cortisol, often called the stress hormone
Adrenaline (epinephrine)
Noradrenaline
These hormones prepare your body for action by:
Increasing heart rate
Raising blood pressure
Speeding up breathing
Tensing muscles
Sharpening focus
Releasing stored sugar into the bloodstream for energy
Temporarily slowing digestion
Suppressing aspects of the immune system
If you needed to escape danger, these changes would be incredibly useful.
But your body was never designed to stay in this state indefinitely.
Chronic Stress Changes Everything
In a healthy stress response, once the threat disappears, your body returns to baseline.
Heart rate slows.
Muscles relax.
Hormones settle.
Recovery begins.
Unfortunately, chronic stress prevents that reset from happening. When stress is ongoing, cortisol and other stress chemicals remain elevated, keeping the body in a prolonged state of high alert. Over time, nearly every system in the body is affected.
Your Heart Pays the Price
Chronic stress can contribute to elevated blood pressure, increased strain on the cardiovascular system, and a greater risk for heart-related conditions.

The same stress hormones that suppress inflammation during emergencies can weaken immune defenses when elevated for prolonged periods, leaving the body less resilient.
Your Digestive System Suffers
Have you ever noticed stomach pain, bloating, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, or changes in appetite during stressful times? That's because the gut and brain are deeply connected. Stress directly impacts digestion and gut health.
Your Muscles Stay Tight
Chronic tension often shows up as headaches, jaw clenching, neck pain, shoulder tightness, and generalized body discomfort.
Your Sleep Quality Declines
Many people don't realize their sleeping problems are often connected to stress.
Elevated cortisol can make it harder to fall asleep, stay asleep, and achieve the restorative sleep necessary for recovery and healing.
The Connection Between Stress and Weight
This is where many people have their biggest "aha" moment. When someone's weight isn't changing despite their best efforts, stress is often an overlooked contributor.
Chronic stress can:
Increase cravings for highly palatable foods
Disrupt hunger and fullness cues
Increase emotional eating behaviors
Elevate blood sugar levels
Promote fat storage, particularly around the abdominal area
Reduce energy for movement and exercise
Disrupt sleep, which further affects appetite-regulating hormones
This is not a willpower problem. It's physiology.
Your body is attempting to survive what it perceives as a persistent threat. That's why telling someone to "just try harder" when they are chronically stressed misses the bigger picture entirely.
Stress Changes the Brain, Too
Stress doesn't stay in the body. It physically impacts the brain. Long-term stress can contribute to all of the following that you are likely experiencing regularly.
Increased Anxiety and Worry
When the brain is constantly scanning for danger, it becomes harder to feel calm and safe.
Depression and Low Mood
Chronic stress can affect the brain chemicals involved in mood regulation and emotional well-being.
Reduced Focus and Memory

Stress affects memory and concentration more than many people realize.
Difficulty Managing Emotions
When stress levels remain high, small problems can feel overwhelming, and emotional reactions often become more intense.
The "Wear and Tear" You Can't Always See
Researchers use the term allostatic load to describe the cumulative wear and tear chronic stress places on the body. Think of it like driving a car engine at maximum speed every day without maintenance. Eventually, something breaks down. Allostatic load shows up through measurable health markers such as:
Blood pressure
Blood sugar
Cholesterol levels
Inflammatory markers
Waist circumference
The greater the allostatic load, the greater the risk for future chronic disease. This is why stress management isn't self-care fluff. It's preventive healthcare, and why every person and company should be paying attention.
The Good News: Your Stress Response Can Be Improved
One of the most empowering things about understanding stress is realizing that it is modifiable. You cannot eliminate every stressor in life. But you can build a healthier, more resilient response.
Move Your Body
Exercise remains one of the most powerful tools available. Regular physical activity:
Lowers cortisol
Reduces inflammation
Improves mood
Supports heart health
Helps your body respond more efficiently to future stress
Even a daily 30-minute brisk walk can make a meaningful difference.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness, meditation, prayer, and deep breathing have been shown to reduce activation of the stress response. You don't need an hour. Starting with 10–20 minutes a day can help create noticeable changes over time.
Prioritize Sleep
Sleep is where recovery happens. Aim for:
7-9 hours per night
Consistent sleep and wake times
Reduced screen exposure before bed
Limited caffeine and heavy meals late in the evening
Good sleep supports healthy cortisol rhythms and helps your body return to balance.
Lean on Your Support System
Humans were never meant to handle stress alone. Supportive friends, family members, community groups, and trusted professionals can help buffer the effects of stress and reduce feelings of overwhelm.
Nourish Yourself Consistently
As a non-diet dietitian, I believe food should support your well-being—not become another source of stress. A balanced eating pattern that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and protein provides your body with the nutrients needed to navigate stress more effectively. Nutrition is not about perfection. It's about support.
Seek Professional Help When Needed
Sometimes stress reaches a level where additional support is necessary. And that is not weakness. It is wisdom. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), counseling, nutrition support, and other evidence-based approaches can provide valuable tools for managing stress and improving overall health.
